Wolmanized® Residential Outdoor® Wood

Treated with a copper-based preservative and an efficacious fungicide, this wood is ideal for applications including decks, retaining walls, fences, picnic tables, planter boxes, walkways, sill plate and structural members. It comes with a limited lifetime warranty for most residential applications and has earned the endorsement of Hometime's Dean Johnson. Learn more about WolmanizedŽ Residential OutdoorŽ Wood advantages.

Engineers at the Good Housekeeping Institute have deemed Wolmanized Outdoor wood worthy of its Seal.

The Good Housekeeping Seal is a limited warranty to consumers which promises replacement or refund if the product is defective.

WolmanizedŽ wood is a natural and environmentally responsible choice: it's made from wood, a renewable resource, treatment extends the life of the wood, and the preservative used is as gentle as it can be and still be effective and long-lasting. A life cycle analysis confirms the environmental benefits of wood.

To top it off, this wood costs less than other alternatives such as redwood, cedar or recycled plastics.

DuraPine Laminated Columns

Cox laminated timber columns are available in cross-sections from 4x4 to 12x12.

Durapine Laminated Columns

With Cox laminated timber columns you get:

  • Top grade lumber: #1 and better
  • Efficient, built-up configuration
  • Made from Wolmanized pressure-treated wood
  • Re-dried after treatment

These features translate into significant benefits:

  • Attractive appearance
  • Won't twist and no gaping cracks
  • Lighter in weight
  • Ready for installation
  • Hollow core allows for enhanced structural capability or concealed wiring
  • Lifetime limited warranty against damage from termites and fungal decay
  • Can be painted, stained or coated without delay
  • Significantly greater load-carrying capacity than solid timbers for dimensions exceeding 5x5

Durapine Laminated Columns

Laminated vs. Solid Columns
Cox laminated columns are made from southern pine components and joined with waterproof Resorcinol adhesive by a proprietary system. Solid timbers, as they dry out, will twist and often develop unsightly cracks.

Laminated Columns Strength Properties Confirmed
A summary of the results of 11 axial load tests, 18 flexural tests, and 12 axial squash load tests (conducted on Southern Pine columns produced by Cox Wood Preserving) were reported in "Structural Characteristics of Built-up Timber Columns," published in the June 2000 issue of the Journal of Architectural Engineering.

Dry treated lumber is "vitally important"

One of the authorities on building standards in the United States is the federal government's Forest Products Laboratory. The Laboratory scientists say it is "vitally important" to use only lumber that is properly seasoned (that is, re-dried after treatment to an average moisture content of 19% or less). Remember, the benefits of re-dried CA-B pressure-treated wood are significant:

Re-dried Lumber

  • minimizes shrinkage problems;
  • has greater strength and stiffness;
  • is more uniform in size;
  • has better nail and fastener holding power;
  • is environmentally sound;
  • is cleaner and lighter;
  • can be easily painted or stained without delay; and
  • meets building codes, FHA and grade stamp requirements.

DRICON FRTW is lumber and plywood, pressure-impregnated with a proprietary fire retardant solution. The wood is suited for nearly all interior applications and areas shielded from precipitation. Treatment must be performed at a properly equipped, licensed pressure treating plant. Following treatment, DRICON FRTW is kiln dried to a moisture content of 19% or less for lumber and 15% or less for plywood in accordance with AWPA Standards C-20 for lumber and C-27 for plywood. Drying after treatment to these levels is required to comply with the model building codes.

An important feature of DRICON FRTW is that it reacts automatically when subjected to fire exposure. DRICON chemicals react with combustible gases and tars normally generated by untreated wood and converts them to carbon char and harmless carbon dioxide and water. Wood loses strength in a fire only at the rate at which its cross section is reduced. The increased production of char acts to insulate the wood and reduces the rate at which the cross sectional area is reduced. The carbon dioxide and water vapor released dilute the combustible gases to help reduce flamespread.

Only species that have been tested and are currently listed by Underwriters Laboratories are available.

Marine Treated Wood

Marine Treated Wood Wood has been the marine construction material of choice ever since man launched his first boat. When exposed to the often severe buffeting of both wind and waves, the flexibility of wood can yield superior resistance as compared to rigid construction materials. In addition, wood can't rust, won't corrode, and doesn't spall.

Without adequate preservative protection, however, wood is subject to destruction from such marine organisms as Toredo (a shipworm that bores elaborate tunnels within wood) and Limnoria (gribbles that attack the exterior surface in a band around piling). Wolman preservative can prevent these organisms from destroying wood.

Marine Treated Wood
Wolmanized wood has amply demonstrated a superior ability to withstand the harsh exposures and destructive organisms common in marine environments. However, due to the severity of these conditions, wood used for piers, seawalls, bulkheads, docks and in marinas needs the protection provided by higher concentrations of Wolman preservatives. The CCA retention levels required to achieve protection are listed below.
